What is acne?
Acne is a condition that involves the subaceous oil glands of the skin. These oil glands help the skin retain it’s natural moisture, but an overproduction of oil causes bacteria to build up and results in acne, which includes whiteheads, blackheads and cystic acne. An acne scar forms from the trauma to the skin from the acne lesion. It presents as a patch of skin that grows over acne lesions. Acne scars are often thick and pink or red in color and they can be either raised or depressed.
Causes of Acne
There are multiple causes of acne, but experts believe that the primary cause is a rise in androgen hormone levels. Androgen levels rise during adolescents making teenagers especially prone to acne. Acne can also be caused from medications, a diet high in sugar and hormone ladden meat, cosmetics containing pore clogging oils, poor skin hygiene and hormonal changes.
Acne scars do not occur in all people, but many people who have had acne have some degree of scarring. The cause of scarring is often the result of trauma caused from repeatedly “picking” acne. Those individuals with severe cases are more likely genetically related.
