What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks can be unsightly depressed linear streaks that can be red, white, or very close to your normal skin color.
Stretch marks appear as linear scar tissue with damage to the connective tissue within your skin. Typically, early stretch marks start out pink or red for several months, but as they mature they will become whitish linear depressions in the skin.
Causes of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are caused by excess stretching of the skin. Stretch marks most commonly from:
- Pregnancy, occurring on the abdomen, hips, or breasts
- Body building, affecting the arms, legs and chest
- Adolescence, due to a growth spurt
- Individuals experiencing rapid weight gain
